CWT #5: Bitcoin is Our Only Option

Bitcoin is our best tool to protect our freedom

On Monday, the 14th of February 2022, the Canadian government has, for the first time in its history, invoked the Emergencies Act - a successor of its War Measures Act - to stop the ongoing protests around the country. This comes as a response to the Freedom Convoy protests that have been taking place for the last few weeks across Canada, mainly in the capital Ottawa. As part of the emergency measures, the Canadian government announced they plan to crack down on the funding of the protests and will allow banks to arbitrarily freeze the accounts of anyone merely suspected of involvement in the protests.

This financial censorship and oppression, confiscating money and property from anyone who wishes to protest their government, is a fatal blow to basic human rights. People should be able to peacefully protest their government’s actions without fear of persecution. They should be allowed to hold their political views without fear of having their money stolen. The use of financial oppression against protestors is as bad, if not worse, than physical oppression. But it makes the process easier and smoother for the government, which is why they seek to expand their control over the money even further.

All around the world, governments are pushing towards a transition from cash to central bank digital currencies (CBDC). Such a transition will give governments direct and absolute control over the money. No longer will you be able to withdraw your cash from the bank to keep it from being confiscated. The government will be able to directly monitor and control where and how you can spend your own money, and there’ll be nothing you can do around it. In the age of government-controlled digital currencies, confiscating the funds of dissidents would be possible in an instant. But even now, with the current banking system, the control of government is already nearly absolute, and as we can see in Canada now, they are already utilizing it as a tool for control.

Freedom is under attack. If you have to fear your bank account will be taken for speaking against the government, you do not live in a free country, and you should prepare yourself accordingly. The government has weaponized the money and banking system to serve as tools of control and oppression. At these times, the need for an alternative system outside the reach of government could hardly be any greater. Without such an alternative system, any opposition to the government could be starved from resources with the push of a button, freedom of speech and the right to protest would cease to exist, as the threat of losing your money, from life savings to your credit cards, would be inescapable.

Standing up to government overreach is not a crime, It’s a civic duty. It’s what we owe to our ancestors who fought for our freedom. It’s what we owe to our children so they can live to their fullest potential. But to protect our rights and freedom, we can no longer rely on a banking system controlled by the government, and we can no longer depend on money issued by the government. Financial oppression can be stronger than a physical one. You cannot protest for long when you cannot buy food. If we want to protect our rights and freedom in the modern era, we need to have our money separated from the government, outside of their direct reach. What we need is money that cannot be arbitrarily seized and confiscated by the government. Money that can provide financial privacy and protect its users from censorship - what we need is Bitcoin.

With Bitcoin, the government cannot just freeze your account, and it cannot stop your transactions. It is money that they do not control, an alternative to the banking system and central bank issued fiat money of today. This money has no borders, no rulers, no presidents. It cannot be weaponized against the people - it is controlled by the people. If we want to stand a chance to protect our freedom from the tyranny of oppressive governments, Bitcoin is our only option.
